This department focuses on the principles of Ayurvedic drug formulation and their practical applications in clinical practice. It is dedicated to the teaching, standardization, and evaluation of Ayurvedic medicines with the aim of enhancing their quality, efficacy, and safety.
The subject encompasses both Ayurvedic pharmaceutics (Rasa Shastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana) and Ayurvedic pharmacology, providing students with in-depth knowledge about the preparation, processing, and preservation of Ayurvedic formulations. It covers various dosage forms such as churnas (powders), kashayas (decoctions), vatis (tablets), asavas and arishtas (fermented preparations), and more.
Students are trained in the manufacturing procedures, therapeutic actions, indications, and safe usage of Ayurvedic medicines. Emphasis is also placed on the mode of action of herbs and minerals based on Ayurvedic principles like Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, and Prabhava.
This branch is considered the backbone of Ayurvedic medical science, as it nurtures a scientific mindset in students, enabling them to understand drug activity, evaluate therapeutic efficacy, and make informed, rational selections of raw materials and formulations in clinical practice. By integrating classical wisdom with modern pharmaceutical standards, the department plays a vital role in the evolution and acceptance of Ayurveda in contemporary healthcare.
