Agad Tantra (Forensic Science)

Agadtantra, also known as Toxicology, is one of the eight branches of Ashtanga Ayurveda. This discipline focuses on the study of poisons of both animate (animal-origin) and inanimate (chemical or plant-origin) sources, their properties, effects on the human body, and their appropriate management and treatment.

The department offers a detailed study of various Agadas—antidotal substances (Visha-Virodhi Dravyas) and formulations (Visha Virodhi Kalpas)—that have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic practice to neutralize and manage toxic effects. These traditional remedies demonstrate the depth of Ayurvedic wisdom in dealing with toxins, venomous bites, food poisoning, drug reactions, and environmental toxins.

In addition to classical Ayurvedic toxicology, the department also introduces students to relevant aspects of modern forensic medicine, legal procedures, and medico-legal responsibilities. This integrated approach equips students with knowledge applicable in both traditional and contemporary healthcare settings, especially in emergency and poisoning cases.

The department plays a crucial role in cultivating awareness about the harmful effects of toxins and the preventive and curative measures rooted in Ayurveda.
